I’m preparing to move my blog again since Posterous may be getting serious about winding down (having just introduced their tool for backing up your existing posts. Thanks Mitch Cohen for the heads up on that one.)
Which gives me a nice opportunity to struggle with the issue of personal branding. The blog you’re currently reading is available at http://davidschaffer.us, which redirects to http://theremustbe.posterous.com. I suspect most folks reach it directly via the latter url, which is what Planet Lotus links to.
Where did that name come from? I have a long-standing business supporting small business in technology use. I do business as “There Must Be A Better Way“. But most of my on line life lately is more related to my “day job” — Director of Technology for the management consulting firm of Schaffer Consulting (the Schaffer in that title being my father, Robert Schaffer). That’s where I deal with IBM’s collaboration products — Notes, Domino, Traveler, Quickr and Sametime — as well as such sources of blogging delight as Blackberry Enterprise Server, VMWare and Symantec Backup Exec
My first blogging efforts were on a Domino-hosted blog known as Bloginprogress.us. It seemed like a cute name at the time and didn’t limit me to one sphere of experience. But blog spam, bandwidth limitations and unreliable power at my home led me to decide a hosted blog was a better choice.
So the world is my oyster now when it comes to naming. How do I brand myself and what url do I use for the new blog?
